Hoy sabemos que la misión del Apollo 11 fue un éxito y que los tres astronautas que lo tripulaban volvieron sanos y salvos, pero en el momento de lanzar la misión algunos no les daban más allá de un 50% de posibilidades de éxito, por lo que había preparado un protocolo de actuación y un texto para el presidente Nixon en caso de que Armstrong y Aldrin no hubieran sido capaces de despegar de la Luna:

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
